Childhood Development in Fairbanks, AK

If your child has trouble focusing at school, has crowded teeth or still wets the bed often, they may be experiencing sleep issues. Not getting sufficient sleep can be detrimental for a child’s growth. A common cause of sleep problems in children is improper development of the upper and lower jaw. Treatment for this will not only improve breathing and sleep, but can straighten teeth without braces.

How Treatment for Sleep Disorders in Children Works

An airway that is too narrow, underdeveloped or constricted can prevent a child from getting enough oxygen as they sleep. Dr. Miller uses a system of orthodontic devices called Vivos to help the upper and lower jaws develop and reshape the oral cavity. As these areas develop, the child’s airway widens and expands, allowing them to breathe better.

The treatment consists of wearing customized trays at night with some daytime wear and often takes 12 to 24 months. By helping a child breathe better, it allows for higher quality sleep and greater overall health. Expanding the airway also offers a permanent solution for sleep apnea. Treatment for sleep disorders in children can improve chronic allergies, performance in school, bed wetting, headaches and tooth decay.

Straighten Teeth Without Braces

The Vivos treatment not only improves breathing in children but can help straighten smiles. Teeth are often crowded because a child’s jaw is too small. Using specific trays and myofunctional therapy, Dr. Miller works to expand the jaw, allowing plenty of room for teeth to grow in naturally. This can provide a straight smile without the need for braces.

Dr. Miller goes over some of the dental health issues caused by crowded and crooked teeth and discusses how Invisalign can help.

It’s important to treat these issues early, allowing for optimal growth and development and fewer future problems. When children can breathe properly, they can begin to grow, learn and blossom into their full potential.
